The first English translation appeared in 1891 as The Book of Enoch: The First Book of Enoch, The Prophet Enoch, and the Book of the Watchers, by Charles. It was published with a short introduction and a critical apparatus, was performed by comparison with the original texts, and is considered a standard translation. It is also the only translation to have a companion volume, 1 Enoch: The Complete Book of Watchers
Charles translated 1 Enoch into English as a prophet of the first order. He was impressed by the description of the flood and also by the description of the descent of the angels who fell from heaven, and as a result, the Ethiopic Book of Enoch (which he called The First Book of Enoch) contains a description of the descent of the angels which is almost identical to the earlier one. Charles, using the Book of Enoch, made an attempt at translating the Book of Enoch into English and this is the version of it which is more commonly known, and the version used by most second-century Jewish and Christian writers. For the sake of simplicity, we will refer to it as The Book of Enoch rather than The Ethiopic Book of Enoch.
