The first thing to do is to download and install the vCenter Server Appliance. You can get it from the downloads at vmware.com. I will be using a fully configured vCenter Appliance for this guide, so I will be downloading the appliance using the full install package. The full install is a lot bigger than just a small one.
So, in this guide I will be deploying a small virtual test lab with a vCenter Server Appliance. This will be a very small lab to test things and I am using a VMware workstation 6.0, although I can tell you that you can use VMware fusion or any other player. Also I am using a Windows 2003 test lab system, but you can use anything, Ubuntu, freeBSD, etc...
The first thing to do is to reboot the appliance, so that it restarts and you can see the welcome page of the vCenter Server Appliance. If you have a vCenter Server installed on your Windows or Linux system this is the URL you will be getting.
Download the appliance installer from the VMware website. You will need toinstall the vCenter Server Appliance on a machine with an internet connection, since you will not be using your local network as the source for the appliance.I will download the appliance in the VMware downloads page from here: -http://www.vmware.com/go/appliance. The name of the applianceis the name you need to enter in the installer.
We need to download the vCenter Server Appliance installer from the VMwarewebsite. I will download the version of the appliance for vSphere. As we need toinstall it on an ESXi host, I will download this appliance for version 5.5.x.
Before deploying the management appliance, we need to install it. Since we will notbe using the Internet, we will install it through a local network. For thispurpose, we will be deploying the management appliance on the machine that isrunning VMware vSphere/ESXi Server.
After you have installed vCenter you will need to install and configure the vSphere Client. You will also need to download the VMware vSphere Web Client (the web version of the vCenter Server). You can get it from http://www.vmware.com/products/webclient/ . You will also need to download the vSphere Client, which you can get from http://www.vmware.com/products/esxi/ . So, I suggest that you also get the vSphere Web Client before you get the client. 827ec27edc
