Television writer Robert L. Freedman became involved with the project as early as 1993.[16] Although he had not written a musical before, Freedman was fond of Warren's version and drawn to the opportunity to work with Zadan and Meron, whose plans to remake Cinderella he had first read about in a Variety article.[16] Aware that the film could potentially be groundbreaking, Freedman, Zadan and Meron collaborated on several new ideas for the remake, among them ensuring that Cinderella "was defined by more than falling in love", providing her with her own story arc that is beyond simply finding a love interest.[16] The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization allowed the filmmakers an unusual amount of freedom to modify the musical's script, among these changes making Cinderella a more active heroine;[37] Meron credits Freedman with "giv[ing] her a little bit more of a backbone", ultimately developing the character into a more independent woman.[16] Instead of making each character more modern, Zadan opted to "contemporize the qualities of the characters" instead.[20] Freedman was more concerned with writing a film suitable for young girls in the 1990s than writing a multi-cultural film, inspired by stories about his wife being affected by women's representation in films when she was growing up.[16] In a conscious decision to update the fairy tale for a modern generation, Freedman sought to deconstruct the messages young girls and boys were subjected to in previous versions of the fairy tale, explaining, "We didn't want the message to be 'just wait to be rescued",[38] and thus altered the story to "reflect current ideas about what we should be teaching children."[37] Attempting to eliminate the element that Cinderella is simply waiting to be rescued by the prince, Freedman explained, "I'm not saying that it's the most feminist movie you'll ever see, but it is compared the other versions."[16] His efforts apply to both Cinderella and the prince; while Cinderella pines for independence from her stepfamily and actively disagrees with her stepmother's opinions about gender roles in marriage, the prince protests the idea of being married off to simply anyone his parents choose.[38]
The diversity of the cast prompted some members of the media to dub the film "rainbow 'Cinderella'",[13][103][112] Laurie Winer of the Los Angeles Times summarized that the film's cast "is not just rainbow, it's over the rainbow", observing that "the black queen (Goldberg) and white king (Victor Garber), for instance, produce a prince played by Filipino Paolo Montalban" while "Cinderella withstands the company of a white stepsister (Veanne Cox) and a black one (Natalie Desselle), both, apparently, birth daughters of the mother played by Bernadette Peters."[37] A writer for Newsweek believed that Brandy's Cinderella falling in love with a non-Black prince reflects "a growing loss of faith in black men by many black women", explaining, "Just as Brandy's Cinderella falls in love with a prince of another color, so have black women begun to date and marry interracially in record numbers."[34] The Sistahs' Rules author Denene Millner was less receptive towards the fact that Brandy's Cinderella falls in love with a non-Black prince, arguing, "When my stepson who's 5 looks at that production, I want him to know he can be somebody's Prince Charming."[34]
Despite its initial reception, Cinderella has become widely revered as one of the best film adaptations of the fairy tale.[94][99][131] The Daily Telegraph deemed the 1997 adaptation "The final of the trio of classic Cinderella remakes".[27] Both Polygon and Mashable named 1997's Cinderella the best version of the story,[100][132] while Entertainment Tonight ranked the film the third greatest adaptation of the fairy tale.[133] CinemaBlend ranked the film the fourth most charming film adaptation.[66] Highlighting the performances of Montalbán, Peters and Houston, Entertainment Weekly ranked Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella the fourth greatest adaptation of the fairy tale, ahead of both the 1965 (10th) and 1957 (sixth) versions, with author Mary Sollosi calling it one of "the 11 best-known film adaptations of the tale".[43] In 2017, Shondaland.com crowned the film "one of the most inclusive, expensive ... and ultimately beloved TV movies of all time."[16] Kelsie Gibson of PopSugar wrote that the film is superior to Disney's other princess-themed offerings from the 1990s.[47] Den of Geek ranked the film the second best "Cinderella" adaptation, describing it as "the first time the story truly felt magical" and writing "Almost twenty-five years later, this adaptation still feels like the television event it was when it premiered."[134] On February 11, 2021, the day prior to the film's premiere on Disney+, Entertainment Weekly held a virtual reunion with the surviving principal cast members.[135] On August 23, 2022, the cast once again reunited for a television special Cinderella: The Reunion, A Special Edition of 20/20, which was followed by an airing of the film, the first time it has aired on broadcast television in over two decades.[136]
Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is considered to be a "groundbreaking" film due to its diverse cast, particularly casting a Black actress as Cinderella.[28] A BET biographer referred to the production as a "phenomenon" whose cast "broke new ground."[137] Following its success, Disney considered adapting the fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty" into a musical set in Spain featuring Latin music, but the idea never materialized.[138] Brandy is considered to be the first African-American to play Cinderella on-screen.[139] Newsweek opined that Brandy's casting proved that "the idea of a black girl playing the classic Cinderella was [not] unthinkable", calling it "especially significant because" Disney's 1950 film "sent a painful message that only white women could be princesses."[34] Fans have affectionately nicknamed the film "the Brandy Cinderella".[99][132] Brandy's performance earned her the titles "the first Cinderella of color", "the first black Cinderella" and "the first African-American princess" by various media publications,[32][98][140][141] while Shondaland.com contributor Kendra James dubbed Brandy "Disney's first black princess", crediting her with proving that "Cinderella could have microbraids" and crowning her the Cinderella of the 1990s.[16] James concluded, "for a generation of young children of color, 'Cinderella' became an iconic memory of their childhoods, of seeing themselves in a black princess who could lock eyes and fall in love with a Filipino prince."[16] Similar to the film, the stage adaptation has consistently demonstrated color-blind casting. In 2014, actress Keke Palmer was cast as Cinderella on Broadway, becoming the first Black actress to play the role on Broadway.[47] Identifying Brandy as one of her inspirations for the role,[142] Palmer explained, "I feel like the reason I'm able to do this is definitely because Brandy did it on TV".[143]
As mentioned, the beloved movie musical cast also includes actors Whoopi Goldberg, Victor Garber, Natalie Desselle Reid, Bernadette Peters, Jason Alexander, Veanne Cox, and Paolo Montalban as Prince Christopher (a.k.a. Prince Charming). At the time of its premiere, the 1997 musical film was celebrated for its diverse casting, with Brandy as the first-ever Black Disney princess, and Filipino-American Montalban, as the first-ever Asian prince.
From Andy MilioPosted January 18, 2011 at 10:02 AMWell, we have finished Challenge 1 with some great ideas. Now it's time for Challenge 2: designing a shop for any of the Walt Disney parks or either of the Disneyland parks. You need to give descriptions of the shop (what it looks like, etc.), which park it is in, a few things it sells there, if it goes along with a ride (put which ride if so), and if it replaces another shop. I can't wait to see what great ideas we'll see this week. Remember, this challenge ends on January 28 and we ARE having elimination this time. The proprietress is a new Disney character, a sassy redheaded aviatrix with a bomber jacket and an old-fashioned leather flight helmet with goggles. She is equal parts Jessica Rabbit and Gadget Hackwrench, physically appealing while still maintaining an aura of wholesomeness, mostly due to her single-minded love of flight. The counters that were originally used for checking in passengers are now used as the check-out counters, with ornate old cash registers (fitted, of course, with modern technology like barcode scanners). The rotating luggage carousels are now piled high with merchandise, and rotate slowly to display the various wares. Old travel posters of former destinations still line the walls, with such whimsically exotic locales as Pico de Gallo, and Blanche-Niege (Snow White). Suspended overhead is a slightly stylized version of the Wright Brother's original plane, propellers still spinning slowly. The store's merchandise reflects Ms. Hawk's fascination with flight, consisting of model airplanes, kites, and balloons of every type imaginable. There are books on the history of aviation, as well as books and supplies for making paper airplanes. There is even a section devoted to model rocketry and the evolution of space flight. Over in one corner, looking a little bit different than the rest of the store, with old dark wood bookshelves (one of which is labeled inconspicuously as being Area 51 ½) is a section devoted to aliens and UFO's. Music played over the PA system is primarily swing music from the 1940's, the time when this building was abandoned, In a similar fashion to Star Tours, there are occasional announcements made regarding late or rescheduled flights, or attempts to locate wayward crew members, as well as broadcast chatter between the tower and passing aircraft. This could allow for shout-outs for Disney pilots of yore, like Baloo and Launchpad McQuack. Well, there you have it. I think if it was done right, it could be one of the more thematic and fun shops on any of the Disney properties. From Mike GallagherPosted January 19, 2011 at 5:38 PMRandall said: "...She is equal parts Jessica Rabbit..."Which parts? :) From Randall PeekPosted January 20, 2011 at 2:40 AMThe red hair, definitely. When you are ready to post, and when you know you have the proposal done the exact way you want it, post it. If you always bring your "A" game and set the bar high, let the others try to meet it. If they can, they will. If they can't, you'll win. Part of the fun of competitions like this is that each participant has to improve or be fired. You push each other to do better. If you see others gaining on you, work harder. In TPA2 I know that I always did the best I could every challenge. I didn't win, but I know I did the best I could and wouldn't change a thing I did (and I argued the point more than once ;+) I had a ball and have no regrets. From Tim WPosted January 20, 2011 at 1:06 PMWonderland ShoppeThis store will be based off of the Alice in Wonderland movies that Disney has produced. It will be located in Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland, right behind Mad Tea Party. The store will be in a very whimsical looking building, similar to how the Mad Tea Party looks, with bright colors. Before you enter the shop, you encounter a unique way of entering that is an experience all of its own. (Although you can go through the side entrance as well which leads you into the shop)Guards, dressed like cards escort you into the main entrance, and you enter one of three doors, all of which contain elaborately themed rooms that resemble a lush garden with large plants. Then you will see the White Rabbitt inviting you into the Wonderland Shoppe. But there is a special way to get in. Guests are then invited to go down a spiral slide, similar to Alice's fall down the rabbitt hole, that leads them out into the store. While falling down the slide, you pass by numerous things that are falling, as in the movies. You then enter the store, where just as amazing decor as the begining room. The interior is a mini recreation of Wonderland. Instead of carpet, you will be walking on fake grass. Inside the store, you will find numerous goods themed to different characters, movie merchandise, and of course books. Overhead, you will be listening to music that has been inspired from Alice in Wonderland, the soundtracks from the movies, and of course the Almost Alice cd.Merchandise:The store will be split up into four different sections, similar to how the World of Disney or the shops at the Contemporary Resort are set up, with archways leading into the other areas. In the store, the first section will be comprised of media of wonderland. Here you will find the original Disney classic, and the new Alice in Wonderland movies to purchase. You will also find a variety of posters, cds, video games, and books. Books: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, The Nursery Alice, and other novels that are based off of the books such as by Frank Beddor, author of the Looking Glass Wars. Next you will see an area themed to the Tea Party. Here you can purchase a vairty of themed mugs, kitchenware, collectables, snow globes, and candy all themed to Wonderland. The third area will be themed to the Cheshire Cat. It will feature a variety of plush toys, figurines, toy sets, and games (monopoly, life, clue) all themed to Alice in Wonderland. The final area is themed to the Queen of Hearts, and will be her own private boutique that sticks out from the rest. It will be an area that is filled with hearts and will be the carpeted portion of the store. In here, you will find pins, clothing, jewlery, and accessories. As you conclude your visit through the Wonderland Shoppe, you head to the Cash Registers of Wonderland to make your final purchases. From damond harrisPosted January 20, 2011 at 3:18 PMgood idea tim, but i think that the main entrance should be a little less active because i could see that area clogging up quickly. but i like the idea of the seprate areas within the store. sounds like fun! From Andy MilioPosted January 20, 2011 at 3:34 PMToy Store-yToy Store-y is the gift shop that would go along with the popular Hollywood Studios ride Toy Story Mania. After guests have exited the ride, they enter the shop. The shop is half shop, half play area for the kids. The store is themed as you are still a toy, so you'll see giant pencils, books, and other things you would find in a kid's bedroom. On the store half, guests will find Toy Story merchandise such as :Toy Story Blu-Ray discs or DVDs (separate or in a boxed set)The toys (Woody, Buzz, Ham, Rex, Jesse, Slink, Green Army Men, the aliens, etc.). You can get these figures individually or in a collector's set with all the toys that come in a deluxe toybox. Books, such as the junior novels, picture books for kids, etc.Electronics, like video games and CDs.Some of Andy's favorite board games like Monopoly (with or without a Toy Story theme), the Game of LIFE, Battleship, and Yahtzee. And finally your miscellaneous stuff, like posters (like movie posters that you see at the theater), mugs, notebooks, LEGO sets (you know, the Toy Story 3 ones), backpacks, T-shirts, and other things along the lines of that.On the pay area side, kids can go into Toy Story heaven and play on some of the giant bedroom objects. for example, a ruler would function as a slide, a giant bean bag chair would function as a sort of trampoline, building blocks would be giant stairs (leading to a slide or something), and other giant objects you would find in a kid's bedroom. That allows the kids who are tired of shopping to run and be free while parents check out the items. From Andy MilioPosted January 20, 2011 at 3:35 PMYeah, I need to work on my photo editing lol :)From Tim WPosted January 20, 2011 at 4:36 PMDamond, I actually thought of making it like a really discrete entrance, with a shabby looking building that would unfold into the magical wonderland shoppe. I somewhat agree that it could get a little crowded and overwhelming for the store. My other option was to imaginary place an Alice in Wonderland ride, like the one from Disneyland, into fantasyland. Then this would be the shop coming off of the ride. From damond harrisPosted January 20, 2011 at 9:22 PM^ yeah i see where your going at but for the slide, i know disney would have to make one person at a time go down it which would definetly slow it down. From Randall PeekPosted January 21, 2011 at 2:12 AMI think an interesting take on the Wonderland store would have a transition between the cartoon version of the classic Alice film to the comparatively realistic Wonderland of the recent Tim Burton film. An interesting way of doing the transition would be to have the two rooms separated from one another by a wall, and on the wall are a series of 'mirrors,' in reality just slightly silvered glass, so it is still essentially transparent, with the classic Alice character on one side facing its own 'reflection' of the Burton version, and vice versa, as seen in the other room. The figures could be full-scale recreations, possibly even Audio-Animatronics, so that they actually mirror each others movements. Remember the classic mirror routine with Groucho and Harpo Marx? Imagine that with the two different Mad Hatters, and you'll get what I'm getting at...From Andy MilioPosted January 21, 2011 at 5:10 PMJust one week before we close up. We still have 5 more posters, if I'm correctFrom Andy MilioPosted January 23, 2011 at 1:39 PMWhere is everybody? From Joseph CatlettPosted January 23, 2011 at 2:49 PMThe past, present and future of the Disney Studios converge in the newest shopping experience opening at the Disney Studio Theme Park of the Walt Disney World Resort (near the exit of ONE MAN's DREAM) and at the Hollywood Studios Backlot of Disney California Adventure (taking over the empty soundstage between Muppetvision and Monsters Inc). We present THE STUDIO ARCHIVES.Guests entering the Spanish modern style studio building made famous during the Hollywood Golden Age will enjoy a Part Merchandise location and part Museum, this shopping experience will allow shoppers to see dozens of props, costumes and concept art from past, present and future Disney, Touchstone and Hollywood Studios productions while clips from these movies play on giant overlapping screens on the walls of the store.Scattered liberally throughout the store, the props will include things like Herbie the Love Bug, Dick Tracy's signature Yellow Fedora and coat, original sketches of classic Disney animated features, costumes from The Parent Trap, Robots from The Black Hole and an original videogame cabinet for Space Paraniods from Tron and much more. The displays will continually switch out to feature props from new and coming releases. Guests will also get to bring home reproductions of some of those props. These reproductions will be high quality pieces including everything from the cursed Aztec Gold Coins from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, Discs from TRON LEGACY, the President's Book of Secrets from NATIONAL TREASURE 2 and Captain Nemo's smoking jacket from 20K LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. However, the biggest draw for this shop is not something you can buy and PHYSICALLY bring home with you but something you can DIGITALLY bring home with you. As we know, Steve jobs of APPLE is currently one of the biggest stockholders of the Walt Disney Company. These stores will be the home of an exclusive partnership between APPLE and DISNEY that will allow guests with IPODS, IPADS, IPOD TOUCHES, and IPHONES to download any film from the Disney archive directly to their devices while in the store. Everything from SKELETON DANCE to CONDORMAN, from PLANE CRAZY to TRON will be available here and only here to download and take wherever you go.Kiosks for these downloads will be be shaped like giant film reel cans stacked one atop another and will be staffed directly by Apple trained Disney castmembers similar to the service you see at Apple Stores in high end shopping malls. Not unlike the shops of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, THE STUDIO ARCHIVE stores on each coast will be the only place a lot of this merchandise will be found in the world and will be a destination in and of itself for movie fans. From James KoehlPosted January 23, 2011 at 4:04 PMJoseph, I think this one was much superior to your last proposal. It was much more under control- the last one started out great, but IMHO got out of control and became unrealistic. This one is a very good proposal. From Randall PeekPosted January 24, 2011 at 2:22 AMI like Joseph's proposal, too. Very well thought out. A nice combo of Disney memorabilia and exclusive, probably high-end merchandise is a good idea. I'm not sure how the downloads through Itunes would work, since only a fraction of park guests would possess the Ipod Touch or Iphone, and neither Disney nor Apple would make content available without DRM. Also, how much time would it take to download a movie? From Andy MilioPosted January 24, 2011 at 5:12 AMI'll give my reviews once everyone has posted, but I like Joseph's idea a lot, but I'm questioning the duo of Disney and Apple.....Ah well. Anyways, we are waiting on:Damond HarrisAnthony MurphyEric SFrom damond harrisPosted January 25, 2011 at 2:45 PMTHE MAGIC WAREHOUSE (yes I know pretty bad name but I couldn't think of anything good)My store could go in two diffrent places, either in downtown disney or a new land that I have come up with for that is themed around different male heroes in Disney movies. The store will be in the shape of the pentagon and in the middle will be a two story warehouse that will have all the merchandise. On the outside, the warehouse part will be completely black with different scenes of Disney images moving around the outside. On the top of the warehouse will be a giant crystal ball with figurines of Disney characters floating inside it (such as Aladdin, Hercules, Mulan, Cinderella, etc. The store will be pretty big and will have 4 different themes: Disney heroes, Disney princesses, future technology, and fantasy. Everything will take up 1/5 of the store and the remaining 1/5 will be a place where people can eat. A key feature in each section will be that they will all have kiosk that customers will be able to buy smaller merchandise from such as Vinylmation collectors items, sweat shirts, snow globes, etc. The kiosk will work by being directly connected to the warehouse at the center of the store. The customer will select the item they are looking for by going through different categories and browsing different items, typing in a key word, or picking up an order they filled out earlier (either they placed a order earlier and asked to pick up the item later or they ordered it online.). Once the customer has found what they are looking for, they will pay for it using credit card, debit card, or cash and the order will be sent to the warehouse where cast members will find the item(s) and place them one by one on a table that will push the item to the kiosk door. While the customer is waiting, they can watch short cartoons on the touch screen window they ordered their item on. Once the item arrives, smoke will billow out of a door and the item will appear magically. Each kiosk will be themed after something from the area they are in. For example, in the Disney Heroes section, one of the kiosk will be themed after Aladdin. It will have a globe in the center with genie around the outside (kind of like the Aladdin float in the magic kingdom parade). The touch screen will be below that and look like it is floating on the smoke that genie produces whenever he comes out of his lamp. The smoke that comes out of this kiosk will be blue to match genies magic smoke. Once the smoke begins to billow, genies eyes will start flashing and he will say something like "And heeeeere it comes!" (or something else genie would say like a cheesy joke or something). Bags will be placed along the side of the kiosk so customers can bag their item(s). Of course, people will be able to buy larger items and regular items around the store set up just like the stores on main street u.s.a.From Andy MilioPosted January 25, 2011 at 3:04 PM^Very good! I just submitted the poll, so it should be up later today. And now time for review:Randall- Your idea was very creative. You made the plane theme run smoothly in your shop. Although I wonder about that UFO section... still a great ideaTim- You as well had a great idea. I liked how the shop was separated into parts. However, I have to agree with the others about the slide; it would get clogged up easily. Also, I don't think a big shop like this would fit with a small midway ride. Joseph- Your idea was astounding. Your choice of merchandise was superb, but I'm pondering the inclusion of the Apple downloads. It's a good idea, but like Randall said, I wonder about how long it would take to download, and I don't think many people, especially the kids, would have an Apple product. My favorite of the week.Damond- You are doing very well. Although the name is kinda cheesy, the interior is great. I wonder about the shape of the store, but I loved how you have a different introductions for items from each kiosk. Very creative idea. Anthony- I've always wanted a Haunted Mansion shop! Your tombstone idea was funny; that was probably my favorite merchandise. I like how you included the optical illusion merchandise. I'm not sure how the shop would be "under" the border, but I'm sure you could explain it to me. Eric- Last but certainly not least is Eric. Even though the Seven Dwarves Mine Coaster is not out yet, I still loved the shop. I especially liked the jewelry idea; it fits the theme of mining very well. Even though your idea was short, I guess "quality is better than quantity" can fit here perfectly. Good job everyone. It was tough picking a favorite, as I loved every single entry. It looks like we'll have some tough competition this season :). Keep up the great work guys ;)From Anthony MurphyPosted January 29, 2011 at 11:13 AMBetween Fantasyland and Liberty Square, a guest needs to go through a small tunnel (the extra seating for Columbia Harbor House is up there). Its near the back end of Peter Pan's flight. Underneath that "tunnel" is an entryway for a store that pretty much sells kitchen items, if I am remembering correctly! I want to put the shop there! From Andy MilioPosted January 29, 2011 at 12:32 PM^Oh, I never knew that! That's very interesting. Sounds good :)From Joseph CatlettPosted January 29, 2011 at 5:22 PMAndy, thank you very much for the compliments and pick as your fave of the week(doing the silent happy dance in my head). Now regarding how many people would really be carrying around an Apple product with them...I think you'd be surprised at the amount of people between the ages of 13 and 35 that go no where without their IPOD. In the circle of friends I hang out with that IPOD (or IPHONE as the case may be) goes with them everywhere. Next time you head out to an amusement park keep an eye out for the number of teenager especially plugged into their Ipods. You may be taken slightly aback.Oh and by the way.....Franthony...the thony who's watched too many episodes of THE NANNY.From Andy MilioPosted January 29, 2011 at 5:42 PM^oh ok, that's interesting. I just never see people busy with their iPods; they are usually having fun at the park. And lol about Franthony; that was funny :PFrom Tony DudaPosted January 29, 2011 at 11:26 PMTranthony - Thony takes a trip to Sweden. From Randall PeekPosted January 30, 2011 at 3:12 AMBananafanafofanthony - Thony that likes to play the Name Game.Good God, I've created a monster...From Mike GallagherPosted January 30, 2011 at 5:05 AMHey Randall...you didn't create NUTTIN"!!
